Visiting Gardens Tour of Donald Pell's Private Gardens

Tour the private studio gardens of award -winning garden designer Donald Pell. Since 2008, Pell has been converting his 14-acre farm into a lush landscape of naturalistic gardens in the New American style.

An historic stone farmhouse surrounded by gravel pathways through which we will experience unique plants and novel combinations of form, texture and color.  Large scale perennial plantings are laid out in interesting combinations that mimic natural habitats.

Please join us to propagate dwarf cosmos and coneflower seeds, or limelight hydrangea cuttings in preparation for our propogation class for our club flower show on September 24th. All supplies will be provided but feel free to bring your own seeds/cuttings to plant and share

Visiting Gardens Tour - LADEW TOPIARY GARDEN & CAVANO PERENNIALS

Date:  Tuesday June 16

LADEW TOPIARY GARDEN  3535 Jarrettsville Pike  Monkton MD

Arrive around 10:15.  About 1.5 hour drive from West Chester via Route 1S and Rte 23W

Lunch at SUNSHINE GRILLE & BISTRO.   12607 Ford Rd.  Fork MD 21051

Arrive  around noon.  about 20 minutes from Ladew

Just a few minutes from Sunshine Grille.

Cavano is a wholesale nursery but they will allow us to shop at prices 50%  below retail (this is higher than the wholesale price).  A vast array of fields and greenhouses makes it exhausting and overwhelming, so it's advisable to plan ahead about what you want to buy.

To facilitate carpooling, you can let Meg know if you will be going.  Warning: Think about the capacity of your vehicle to haul plants as you consider if more than one person will travel with you.

BROOKSIDE GARDENS  1800 Glenallan Avenue  Wheaton MD 20902. 

Admission free; onsite parking.   Approximately 2.5 hrs. drive from Westchester.  Arrive 11:00 AM.  A 50-acre garden including many areas (Aquatic , Azalea, Butterfly, Childrens, Rose, Japanese etc.) 

Lunch around 1:00 PM at a restaurant TBD in Dupont Circle or Georgetown area.

DUMBARTON OAKS 1703 32nd Street NW  (31st and R)  Arrive 2:30 – 3:00.                        Admission $15.  2-hour street parking (A parking garage 0.6 miles away a Wisconsin and S St Parking  called Air Garage, (may require reservation).  Mildred Bliss began a (sometimes rocky) 30-year collaboration with Beatrix Farrand to develop a 16-acre garden at the highest point in Georgetown.   Terraces, borders, garden rooms, pleached avenues.

Dinner – TBD either in DC or Richmond

LINDEN ROW INN   Two-hour drive from Dumbarton Oaks.  100 E. Franklin St. Richmond VA 23219.  (804) 783-7000.  From around $200.  Historic row houses and main house restored with modern comfort. 

ST. JOHN’S MEWS/CHURCH HILL NEIGHBORHOOD/ CARRINGTON SQUARE  Near E. Broad Street.  2 miles from Linden Row Inn.  Stop by first thing in morning.  Garden Recipient of GCA Founders Fund award.   Designed and maintained by the Garden Club of Virginia, in historic district, known for its 18th century ambiance.  Framed by St. John’s Church.

LEWIS GINTER BOTANICAL GARDEN.  1800 Lakeside Ave.  Richmond VA 23228.  15 minute drive from Linden Row or Church Hill neighborhood.  Arrive mid-morning.  Admission $20/$15 seniors.  Onsite parking.  A variety of very fine gardens.

Lunch at the cafe.

NATIONAL ARBORETUM3501 New York Ave. NE Washington, DC .  About 2 hours from Gitner and 2 hours from Westchester.  (halfway on the quickest route between Gitner and home).  Arrive around 2:45 or 3:00 p.m.  Free admission; onsite parking.  Notable bonsai collection:  Pinetum beautifully designed with many specimens of “dwarf” conifers that are now sizeable.  Camellia hill (many may be
